Upon a cold and wet August Bank holiday Monday, at Ross Regatta, came a win for a composite IM3 coxless pair of James Camp (Minerva Bath) and James Smith (Bristol Ariel).
During the pair’s semi-final, the composite came up against Nottingham RC and from viewing the opposition’s warm up did not necessarily believe a win would be possible… The composite were on the club side, which had the slower stream and more staggered start and finish, however, from a strong start Minerva/Ariel took the other crew within 20 strokes and continued to drive away and despite a few timing issues near the finish eventually won with a comfortable lead of 2 lengths.
In the final, the composite raced against Swansea University and this time racing in the far lane – which had the stream, but sharper corners and the bank to contend with. Again after a comfortable start, Minerva/Ariel pushed away from the other crew, who also maintained a push from the start. During the final the conditions had become worse, with a strong cross wind to contend with, which crews altered their course to deal with. The composite maintained the lead throughout the race and near the finish Swansea University decided to row in Minerva/Ariel’s lane (just a few lengths behind the composite).
Minerva/Ariel won the final with a comfortable lead of 1 ½ lengths.
