The junior squad turned out in large numbers to take part in the Avon County Head race. For many of our juniors it was the first race ever! All our juniors who started rowing in September took part and the Novice coxed quads was a Minerva internal affair of the boys –Will P., Robert, Finn and Jacob-coxed by Sue against the girls –Hannah, Martha, Ella and Marianna-coxed by Sarah. While the technique of the girls was much nicer the boys beat the girls in the end and came first.
Lydia joined 3 girls from Avon County Rowing Club and they came 6th out of 13 crews. Not bad at all for the first time rowing together as a crew ever!
In their first race Will H. and Henry came up against Max and Charlie, who have rowed a regatta or two before, in the J18 doubles. The experience paid of and Marlie won the race beating crews from Monmouth and Wycliffe.
Not happy with just racing once Max and Charlie joined forces with Elliott from Avon County Rowing Club and Rich from Wilshire Scullers and raced for the 2nd time in 2 weeks as a WAGS crew. Due to lack of competition they had to race IM1 and were beaten by the University of Bath’s IM1 (they really were IM1) crew into 2nd.
The women’s VIII used Avon County Head race as a last practice before the Women’s Head of the River Race. Coxed by their dedicated coach Andy W. Jeanette, Elaine, Helen, Sarah, Laura, Kathryn, Jane and Emily took on the familiar course and came 4th (out of 5).
Again Helen and Elaine went out for a second time and raced in their double. Unfortunately they had no competition, but got lots of cheers on their way past the Boathouse Pub from the Minervians enjoying a well earned drink after a long racing day!
