Thank you to the committee, without whom none of the above could’ve been achieved: thanks to Arnold, Andy W, Sarah, David, Jeanette, Vicky, Emily, Matthew, Laura and Sean. I’d also like to thank Bethan and Charlie J who are no longer on the committee. Don’t forget though that everyone on the committee is a volunteer and spend their free time organising, phoning and fixing on your behalf.
Thanks to all those who helped out and sat in during the learn to row courses in 2011, especially to Andy H for project managing! We have another course next month, so we will need volunteers once again.
First award is the herding cats award.
• Third place goes to David for captaining the men’s squad. The reason he only gets third place is because the squad is only just starting to get bigger. I think at one point, it was only him and one other person to organise!
• Second place goes to Sarah for organising the women. Sarah has taken up the mantle at a time when the squad is growing and Sarah has to try to accommodate experienced rowers and those who have only just started.
• Last December, Jeanette took over as junior organiser and she tries to get some kind of idea every week how many juniors are going to turn up. Some weeks it works, this could be due to cake bribery, others it does not, but for that reason, Jeanette gets the herding cats award.
We have a number of coaches, as you know, at Minerva and I’d just like to say thanks to them for all their hard work: Andy W, Andy U, Arnold, Steve, Tim and Sue. Again, these people are volunteers!
This brings me nicely on to the top coach award. The award this year goes to someone who has only recently passed his level 2 coaching award and has put it to great use all summer - Steve.
The next award this year is the junior plate. This award goes to two juniors, for stepping up their game and training the hardest and are most consistent in attending, for helping out in the club when asked, for coaching some of the women (and they have coached juniors also), for getting on with finishing their level 2 –Max and Charlie .
All round good egg: someone not on the committee or one of the coaches. This year’s winner has helped out at every LTR course, at the working weekend, mentoring Plus etc: she rows and she coxes. The award goes to Sue.
I’d like to say thanks to Tim B for cutting the grass all summer!
The rowing almanac records a total of 19 wins for Minerva in 2010/2011. However there is one Minerva crew who consistently keep winning year after year and the last 12 months has been no different. The Minerva Crew of the Year goes again to Andy and Gary.
This year's winner of the Individual Cup, presented to someone who is deemed to have excelled in their pursuit of the sport. This year’s winner is Arnold for winning everything at the Henley and the Masters Champs as well as breaking the record for the 2k ergo time for his age group at the national indoor rowing championships.
The final award of the year is usually the Bent Rigger award. This year, it goes to four of the most experienced Minerva rowers: Andy U, Andy H, William and Nic for putting a huge hole in the bows of Fontus!
We have a great, friendly rowing club. If there were an award for cheering, Minerva would get it! With the limited facilities we have, we do a good job. Now, let’s get some crews out racing this winter and be friendly but ruthless! Thanks to one and all!
