Essen Regatta, Germany - 15th to 17th May 2009

Vicky and Gemma represented Minerva Bath in the International Regatta at Essen in Germany last month. The event is effectively 2 regattas on consecutive days and the women raced in 2 fours and an eight each day.

On the Saturday Vicky's four won whilst Gemma's was 4th behind a Dutch and German crew. The eight ended up racing a German Club composite that is in training for their National Sprint Regatta Series over 250m. As a result they had a race on their hands out of the blocks but soon moved away.

On the Sunday, some more German crews entered the fours event and one Dutch and two German eights came into the eights event.

Once again, Vicky's crew pulled ahead to win whilst Gemma's crew finished 7th. An hour later they were racing together in the eight where the German first eight and the Dutch pushed them back into third place.

All in all a weekend of valuable racing experience on the International Stage that should stand them in good stead for later in their careers.

Gemma and Vicky are athletes on the World Class Start Programme. The Amateur Rowing Association's World Class Start Scheme sponsored by Siemens is a unique talent identification and development scheme. The programme is funded by UK Sport with Lottery money and since 2006 is sponsored by Siemens. The programme at Bath has identified four athletes for Great Britain teams in the past five years including one U23 World Champion. The athletes in Bath train at the University of Bath and at Minerva Bath Rowing Club.
