After Lucy and Helen's trip to Monmouth in the mud, Gemma and Vicky headed off to the site of the 2012 Olympic Regatta at Dorney Lake where they hope to compete in a few years time!!!
The weekend saw much better weather and good racing conditions on the 2000m lake and with both girls entered into Women's Senior 3 Singles, the prospect of some close racing was very exciting. The field on Saturday saw 27 women competing in 4 heats followed by semi finals sorting out the 6 who would race the final. Both girls raced well to make the final where Vicky finished 3rd in 8:08 with Gemma in 5th in 8:19.
Sunday saw a slightly smaller field but with tougher racing as only the first two scullers progressed from the heats into the final. Vicky and Gemma both won their heats before finishing 3rd (Vicky 8:21) and 4th (Gemma 8:23) in slightly slower conditions than the previous day.
Both girls learned a lot from the two days, multi-lane racing and grew in confidence knowing that they can race hard in 5 races over 2 days and be competitive at a National Level event in such a short space of time.
Gemma and Vicky are both athletes on the Amateur Rowing Association's World Class Start Scheme sponsored by Siemens, a unique talent identification and development scheme. The programme is funded by UK Sport with Lottery money and since 2006 is sponsored by Siemens. The programme at Bath has identified four athletes for Great Britain teams in the past four years including one U23 World Champion and is run by Paul Stannard, Performance Development Coach, GB Rowing. The athletes in Bath train at the University of Bath and at Minerva Bath Rowing Club.
